The Foundation Fondazione Biotecnopolo di Siena is a nonprofit, private legal entity with registered office and operational headquarters in Siena. The founding members include the Ministry of Universities and Research, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy.
A strategic national project aimed at:
Developing applied research and innovation in the field of biotechnologies and life sciences
Encouraging the creation of an international network for countering pandemics
Promoting and coordinating study, research, technical and scientific development and technology transfer activities
The Foundation also functions as a pandemic hub, particularly focused on the development and production of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of emerging epidemic and pandemic diseases. To achieve these goals, the Fondazione Biotecnopolo relies on valuable collaborations at national and international level.
National Pandemic Center – CNAP
The Foundation performs the functions of a pandemic hub through the «Centro nazionale anti pandemico-CNAP» (National Pandemic Center) that makes use of first- and second-level spoke centers, as well as pathogen sequencing networks for research, development and production of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of emerging epidemic and pandemic diseases, ensuring the necessary interactions with centers involved in the development of vaccines according to the One Health model.
Through the CNAP, the Foundation pursues fruitful collaboration with the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (DG HERA of the European Commission), and more generally with other institutions responsible in the international arena for the management of health emergencies, including with a view to technology transfers that enable virtuous cooperative support for the protection of human health in Europe and worldwide. For this purpose, it establishes relationships with analogous entities and organizations, both in Italy and abroad.
