The Foundation

The Fondazione Biotecnopolo di Siena is a nonprofit, private legal entity with registered office and operational headquarters in Siena. The founding members include the Ministry of Universities and Research, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy. The Bylaws of the Fondazione Biotecnopolo di Siena was published on the Italian Official Gazette on June 10, 2024.

The Foundation is a project of strategic national value aimed at promoting and developing applied research and innovation in the field of biotechnologies and life sciences, including for the purpose of countering pandemics. It has the function of promoting and coordinating study, research, technical and scientific development, technology transfer and innovative process transfer activities for the purpose of countering pandemics.


Mission

The Foundation has the purpose of promoting and developing applied research and innovation in the field of biotechnologies and life sciences, also for countering pandemics.

It has the function of promoting and coordinating study, research, technical and scientific development, technology transfer and innovative process transfer activities for the purpose of countering pandemics. The Foundation also functions as a pandemic hub through the «Centro nazionale anti pandemico-CNAP» (National Pandemic Center).


The national and international network

In collaboration with other national and international entities, the Foundation encourages the implementation of programs for research, innovation and technology transfer to the production system in the field of biotechnological applications aimed at health protection based on a One Health approach. It also sustains the other project activities related to the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) interventions. This is done by promoting the coordination and integration of the NRRP measures.

The Foundation works in conjunction with institutions in the territories, including regional and local institutions and state territorial offices, the system of universities and other higher education and research institutions, both public and private, National Health Service entities, IRCCS (Scientific Institutes for Research, Hospitalization and Healthcare), ISS (Higher Institute of Health), INAIL (National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work), IZS (Experimental Animal Prophylactic Institutes) as well as the system of business and professional representation, with particular reference to the framework of the Siena life sciences ecosystem.

Resources reserved for the Fondazione Biotecnopolo di Siena:

  • 12 million euros in 2023
  • 16 million euros as from 2024
